It's a universal set of truths about your mission from the perspectives of key players—sales, product, engineering, and marketing. It's what you do, why you do it, the technical ins-and-outs, and how you communicate that to the world.
The Discovery Specification is a one-and-done document that aims to answer everything about your project from the perspective of the many hats you'll be sharing and wearing as a startup team.
With a well-defined discovery specification, you'll describe to everyone - in granular detail - your vision from cover to cover so there's no room for misaligned hires, project confusion and expensive mistakes early on.
Expect to answer:
- What are you building?
- Who are you building for?
- What's the story we'll tell to investors?
- What do they want, and how do you give them more
- How will you build it?
- What are the challenges?
- Who should we be hiring for?
- What does it look like?
- How do you describe the value you bring?
- How do you SHOW that value in the best possible way?
- What does 'BEST POSSIBLE WAY' even mean?
- How will you market it?
- Where do we find our audience?
- What pivots should keep in mind?
- Why should they choose you over your competitors?
- Who even are they?
- What are the pushbacks to expect, and how can we get around them?
