Rebuilding the Tibco developer download site to be more user friendly within a tightly formed, ill-fitting e-commerce platform

Overview

TIBCO Software, a provider of infrastructure and business intelligence software worldwide, needed a redesign of their Developer Trial Portal. The existing portal was built on an e-commerce platform, making it challenging to manage and download demo software efficiently.

Client Constraints

Development

Redesign and enhance the e-commerce platform,

Quick turnaround

Had a complete turn around due in less than a month's time

No Enhancements

Had to use existing functionality as-is. No building out additional features

Users and their needs

Software Engineers

Software engineers who are building systems where TIBCO tools may be useful are the ones who are downloading trials of their software to see if the software fits their needs
How do I learn more about the software
How do I download a trial?
Have I downloaded this before?
When does my existing trial expire?

Key Enhancements

Centralized Management

allow users to easily download and manage demo/trial installations of TIBCO software.
could view and manage their downloads, see trial expiry dates,
access registration information for all demos.

Streamlined Interface

Product detail pages to display platform downloads and current licenses,
Addressing the End User License Agreement (EULA) accpetence before downloading

E-commerce Integration

Successfully integrated trial software management into the existing e-commerce platform, despite its limitations.

User-Centric Design

Focused on the needs of users by implementing a cart mentality due to the platform's default nature.
Ensured that product detail pages included necessary information and that the EULA was addressed efficiently.

Design

Low-Fidelity Wireframes: Created wireframes to simplify interactions and address key pain points. Iterated on these wireframes based on user feedback

High-Fidelity Prototypes

Developed detailed prototypes to test and validate design concepts with users, ensuring alignment with TIBCO's branding and usability standards.
Updated the portal’s visual design to enhance usability and ensure consistency with TIBCO's overall brand. Focused on making the interface intuitive and visually appealing.

Implementation

Iterative Collaboration

Collaborated with the product manager to ensure the redesign aligned with business objectives and user needs.
Confirmed with the product owner that a complete revamp was scheduled for Q1 of the following year, requiring temporary solutions for immediate usability improvements.

Challenges & Solutions

Challenge: Working within the constraints of an e-commerce platform to manage software downloads and trials.

Solution: Made concessions to work within the technology limitations, ensuring the best possible user experience given the constraints. Confirmed with the product owner that a complete revamp was planned, allowing for immediate usability improvements with the existing setup.

Challenge: Limited room for creativity and iterations due to existing backend technology.

Solution: Focused on reworking the look and feel of existing pages and creatively managing the constraints to enhance usability without significant backend changes.

Conclusion

Outcome and Impact

The redesigned Developer Trial Portal resulted in increased user satisfaction and efficiency in managing software trials. The improved interface led to more downloads, which in turn increased the likelihood of purchases. User feedback was positive, highlighting the enhanced usability and functionality of the portal.

Learnings

This project underscored the importance of understanding platform constraints and working creatively within them. It also highlighted the need for close collaboration with backend teams and product managers to align design solutions with technical and business requirements.

Summary

The TIBCO Developer Trial Portal Redesign project demonstrated the ability to enhance usability and functionality within significant constraints. The successful integration of trial software management into an e-commerce platform showcases the importance of user-centric design and adaptability in challenging environments
