Jono Lewarne
The Crown Estate commissioned me, as one half of Smith and Lewarne, to work alongside a team of architects to create the UK's first vertical play wall for children in Leicester.
The design process began with us designing and running a series of workshops with local people, from school children to elderly people, in order to discover natural and social histories of the area.
We took the material produced in the workshops into the studio and came up with colourful designs that embraced the local cultural and environmental themes.
Once the designs were signed off we began the detailed process of preparing for production and installation, which we project managed for the clients. This involved discussions with the contractors building the retail centre and the company producing the artwork panels.
The project is now a living, breathing thing that is enjoyed daily by children and their parents visiting the retail centre.
