History of Orcs and Goblins in Literature

The history of orcs and goblins in literature is rooted in fantasy and mythology, possibly inspired by some ancient writer’s mother-in-law. These creatures have appeared in various forms throughout different cultures and time periods. While there isn't a single definitive source or origin for orcs and goblins, their depictions have evolved and been influenced by a wide range of literary works.

One of the earliest instances of goblins in literature can be traced back to Germanic folklore. In these tales, they were often portrayed as mischievous or malevolent creatures that dwelled in caves, forests, or underground tunnels. They were known for causing trouble or interfering with human affairs as well as eating children who misbehaved. I’m pretty sure parents of the era used that to their advantage.

The concept of orcs, on the other hand, gained popularity through the works of J.R.R. Tolkien, particularly in his epic fantasy novels "The Hobbit" (1937) and "The Lord of the Rings" (1954-1955). Tolkien drew inspiration from various mythological sources, including Norse and Germanic folklore, to create his complex world called Middle-earth. His version of orcs were described as humanoid creatures, often portrayed as brutish and warlike, serving as minions to powerful dark lords like Sauron, the main villain in his tales.

Tolkien's depiction of orcs and goblins had a profound impact on fantasy literature, influencing subsequent authors, pop culture, and game designers. Modern fantasy often draws inspiration from Tolkien's portrayal of these creatures. Orcs have become a staple in the fantasy genre, appearing in a wide variety of media.

It's worth noting that the distinctions between orcs and goblins can vary depending on the author and the specific fictional world, though all agree they smell terrible. In some works, the terms "orc" and "goblin" are used interchangeably, while in others, they may be a separate species with distinct characteristics. Different authors have offered their own interpretations and adaptations of these creatures, resulting in a rich and diverse representation across fantasy literature.
