I wrote a series of literary articles for a literary magazine in Catalan. I'm showcasing my best article here.
The article analyzes the evolution of popular and genre literature, highlighting its significance in Anglophone culture, particularly in the British and American contexts. It begins by examining the origins of genre literature with works like "The Castle of Otranto" by Horace Walpole and "Frankenstein" by Mary Shelley, noting how these works, initially considered inferior, have gained recognition over time.
It explores the relationship between genre literature and the British Empire, arguing that the need to consolidate English culture in colonial territories drove the production of popular works. This contrasts with the Catalan literary landscape, which has had to struggle for the survival of its language and culture amidst political and cultural oppression.
The article also examines some Catalan authors who have contributed to the genre, such as Joan Perucho, Pere Calders, and Manuel de Pedrolo, highlighting their most representative works in science fiction and fantasy.
Finally, it concludes that genre literature is an important part of literary culture and suggests a promising future for genre literature in Catalonia, with authors like Marc Pastor experimenting with new narrative forms.
