Research and Strategy:

Before starting any project, it is crucial to understand the industry I am designing for. I began the project by doing competitor and market research. These competitors were found by searching for top contractors in construction in Austin, analyzing their brand and website, and using that data to find strengths, weaknesses, and opportunities.
Apart from research, I also led a brand identity exercise with my clients. I met with the stakeholders and utilized FigJam to lead it. The exercise involved three main parts to understand their brand identity:
Questions to get client comfortable and thinking of their brand in a personal manner.
Adjective Activity
Value Exercise

Moodboards

After gathering research and speaking to the clients about how they would like their brand to be in vision, adjectives, and values, I moved on to creating mood boards with my team. We created one mood board each and used the brand exercise as the determinant for what we wanted to envision. Considering that the client wanted a brand that looked western but still in the construction industry, these are the mood boards we created.
The mood boards were presented to the client, and the client was able to resonate with the second mood board. This allowed us to move into logo creation and brand guide.

Logo Process

To create the logo, I wanted to encompass Western designs. Something that stood out from Western designs was the cattle branding monogram. I created some sketched concepts and passed them by the client for them to approve the direction.

The client was beyond thrilled about the sketches and approved the concepts with some feedback. After applying the feedback I was able to finalize the logo with their approval and feedback.

Brand Guide

While creating the logo, I was simultaneously creating a brand guide. This brand guide speaks on the logo usage and misuse, color palette purpose, values that the client holds internally and externally, what their voice is, the type of imagery they should use, and social media content. This will all help my client keep their vision and values aligned in the future.

Website Design

As mentioned, I had another designer helping me with this project. While I was creating the brand identity, she was creating the website Site Map and low-fidelity wireframes. After the low-fidelity, I designed the high-fidelity screens. We used UX principles to create a user-friendly and easy-to-use site.

After designing these screens in Figma, I went into Wix and developed the website there. I chose Wix because it is what met my clients needs in terms of pricing and domain purchases.

Mockup Material

To solidify the brand, I created various mockup materials. Talking to the clients every week allowed me to get to know their preferences and to envision even further what they liked.

Main Takeaways

I found that establishing good communication and camaraderie with my clients helped to understand what they wanted and their visions of their brand. When people are starting their first business they are very excited. So I enjoyed seeing their enthusiasm for the designs and seeing their brand come to life was rewarding.
I look forward to helping more people with their startup company or their current company.
