Analyst Calls and Podcast Production for dYdX Foundation I work as Video Editor and Motion Designer for the dYdX Foundation’s recurring Analyst Calls and podcast series. I edit multi track Riverside recordings, integrate supporting footage when needed, and deliver polished long form episodes for YouTube. I also developed and maintain the full branded motion package, including intro and outro sequences, custom lower thirds, on screen text systems, and the overall visual identity. This role combines structured editorial storytelling with clean, brand aligned motion design. https://youtu.be/yZ1m0VfdV4M?si=pA74egDuL7iHYVbb

The Joys of Aspect Ratio & Orientation Different social media platforms require specific aspect ratios & orientations for posted videos to be displayed correctly – the last thing you want is your carefully crafted editing work to be butchered by arbitrary cropping. The most common formats are: 1.00 aspect ratio, square orientation: e.g. X, FB, IG main tab 1.78 aspect ratio, landscape orientation (horizontal): e.g. X, FB, YT 1.78 aspect ratio, portrait orientation (upright): e.g. X, FB, IG & YT reels/shorts/stories, TT X and Facebook are the most accommodating – any of these three can be posted, however, 1.78 aspect ratio, landscape orientation, best matches the sequential text & media presentation style on these platforms. YouTube insists on 1.78 aspect ratio, landscape orientation. For Instagram & YouTube reels and all posts on TikTok 1.78 aspect ratio, portrait orientation, is mandatory. Until recently, all videos posted on Instagram were forced onto on the “Reels” tab, which meant that when a visitor landed on a profile they only saw images and had to move past a click barrier to see videos … unless a video was posted in square orientation (the Instagram orientation for images), then videos would appear alongside square orientation images on the main tab and also on the “Reels” tap, i.e. were immediately shown to profile visitors without requiring extra action - which greatly enhanced views & engagements. Frequently multiple versions are required and the task of a video editor is to figure out creative positioning of video edit objects - which often have their own fixed aspect ratio & orientation - to maximize use of available space while maintaining core content consistency. To illustrate, I append a sample collage showing a video edit in all three formats in a single video in Contra’s favorite 1.25 aspect ratio landscape orientation format. The essential core objects were the Imagen “Best Actress – Drama (Television)” nomination poster and Emily’s iconic “where is Hope” scene she shared with co-star J.R. Bourne (cropped & enhanced to showcase Emily’s dramatic facial expression work in close-up frame) followed by the final season “Mayans MC” trailer, then the printed list of nominees. Other objects were optional. The square orientation version facilitated inclusion of Emily’s “microwave smashing scene” slowed to match the edit duration. An important consideration for client and video editor is therefore on which social media platform(s) their video edit shall be posted, so before you start work on an editing task be sure your spec includes aspect ratio & orientation.

Deana Carter – Strawberry Wine – 30th anniversary: human + AI hybrid video edit announcing the song’s 30th anniversary featuring Deana at different ages per the five photos in the start frame in my video edits I have reserved use of AI for what could otherwise not be easily produced, such as animating drawings and contemporary people interacting with historical figures & cartoon characters … making this video would have been impossible without text-to-video AI generation and was a spontaneous idea to reflect the enduring quality of this special song connecting people across three decades editing tasks: – write prompt for text-to-video AI generation – underlay audio with a few lines from Strawberry Wine sung by Deana this week – finalize video edit with handles & text

Tatiana Kurtukova - Blue Water Promo Mirror Edit editing tasks: – intro/outro design – collage mirror edit concept of the same base video – select, edit & synchronize video sections – make background for text this is an example of a concept I have applied in several video edits: 1.78 aspect ratio portrait orientation (TT & IG reel format) base video mirrored into a square orientation presentation it doesn’t work with every base video, but with some, especially dance, it creates a cool synergy effect with movement seemingly flowing between & emerging from the mirrored halves to keep with the “blue water” theme I used a matching intro/outro still and tweaked the colors of a video I took myself at a beach to get the dark blue water with purple wave foam effect

Metallica & Lucie Silvas – Nothing Else Matters: music synchronization video edit of two separate live performances of “Nothing Else Matters” by Metallica and Lucie Silvas. Both are performed in violin orchestra arrangement. editing tasks: – intro + outro design – collage edit of two videos – select, edit & synchronize video sections – audio editing to adjust for different musical keys I sometimes get asked about the music synchronization video edits I make; for people interested in project implementation details, here are a few insights. Manually edited music synchronization video edits incorporate artistic concepts and creative design solutions. I use VSDC, which is a wonderful gratis video & audio editor. I have no “automated syncing” gizmo, synchronization is done by ear, i.e. I find the approximate sync offset, then move one video object one position increment at a time in either direction, listen & repeat until it sounds right. When both performers sing to a recorded backing track that is identical in key & speed it is easier to synchronize, but if one sings a capella or performs live, tweaks are required – and especially so when both are live performances by two different artists. Metallica tune their instruments two semitones lower for studio recordings and one semitone lower for live performances. I dropped Lucie’s musical key by one semitone to match theirs. They performed at different speeds. Lucie’s presentation is slower. I dropped Metallica to 97% and raised Lucie to 109% throughout, except to 105% for the closing segment so her final “matters” and Kirk’s final guitar note happen simultaneously. Finding the optimum adjustment parameters took experimenting because changing the speed of only one video when speeds are so far apart looks & sounds unnatural and rarely syncs up well. They did not perform the song with the same segment sequence, so I moved segments around to accommodate this, overlaid one segment with different lyrics mid-song and also the closing segment. During live performances people vary vocal timing and intonation and if sung lyrics were used for synchronization the music would be totally off. Synchronization is therefore by music. Most sung lyrics match up closely, but not all - that is OK, sung lyrics are not supposed to sound perfectly aligned as they would in actual duet performances, rather the point of making music synchronization edits is for it to be notable that they are separate performances which have been merged to create a synergy effect. The volume level in the Metallica video is lower. I raised it. The iconic guitar segment had to stay all Metallica. I faded over the break frames in Lucie’s video and smoothed the Metallica video audio to compensate for the mute audio from Lucie’s video during this segment. I adjusted both videos for hue, tone & saturation to harmonize the color spectrum. As no Metallica & Lucie Silvas version of this song exists, there is no cover image either, so I made one for the intro/outro frames. Etiquette-appropriate crediting is one reason, it is also one of my pet peeves when videos playing on loop jump abruptly from final frame to first. Like millions of people across the world, I love this song and its profoundly meaningful lyrics. I trust you do as well and hope you enjoy this version.

New visual work for OPEN Sessions.🔥 The initial direction was to create something built around flowers. From there, I developed the rest of the artwork in my own visual style, combining translucent floral elements, dark textures and OPEN’s recognizable green color palette. The final result is a bold, atmospheric poster that stays connected to OPEN’s visual identity while introducing a more organic and experimental aesthetic.

STILL OUT is a personal project exploring that moment when inspiration disappears and the only option is to stop overthinking and just create. These are STILL OUT 1 and STILL OUT 2. I designed the pieces as well as the visual direction for both. For STILL OUT 1, I designed the mask. For STILL OUT 2, I designed the long-sleeve T-shirt. Which one is your favourite?

High-contrast fashion visuals created for my own fashion design projects, designed to translate garment concepts into a raw cinematic visual language. I developed the art direction, styling, composition, motion treatment, and AI-assisted visual workflow to create bold monochrome pieces with heavy grain, sharp silhouettes, and an underground editorial fashion aesthetic.
