The Altarpiece Awakens I reimagined Joos van Cleve’s The Crucifixion with Saints and a Donor (ca. 1520) as a living triptych. I kept the original artwork and its recognizable structure as the foundation, then pushed its world into a surreal gothic-fashion direction through gilded armor, sculptural black figures, vivid red garments, and a bright blue sky fractured by red lightning. I also imagined the exterior of the triptych and animated the transition from the closed object into the reinterpreted painting, allowing the artwork to subtly come alive while preserving its Renaissance painted character.
