What would you improve about social media? I'm starting to build a site based on the Interpals model, with a higher focus on privacy and security. My biggest peeve with that site is that most people who have joined in the last five years don't even understand its purpose. The number of bad actors and disengaged members has become absurd. A site birthed by the idea of international pen pals using the internet has become FILLED with people who want private language tutoring for free, a marriage visa to go to another country, or just plain troll (or send "Hi," and then disappear). I'm trying to plan ways for my new site to cultivate a culture towards genuine connection and interaction, along with putting a lot more roadblocks up for bots and the like (using MFA with auth, rate limiting my APIs, etc.). What might you plan?
