Why I Build Hand-Coded Software in a vibe-coders paradise
We are living through a fascinating era for technology. Anyone can prompt an AI assistant to spin up a prototype or scaffold a landing page in seconds. "Vibe coding" and prompt-to-app tools have lowered the barrier to entry for software creation to absolute zero.
So, why did I start an app and website development business dedicated to hand-coding custom solutions?
It comes down to why I fell in love with coding in the first place back in 2017; my profound satisfaction of building something real, robust, and entirely my own from the ground up.
My journey with code started out of pure curiosity; a desire to understand how digital systems actually work under the hood. Over the years, that curiosity turned into a craft.
When you spend years mastering a modern, production-grade tech stack like React.js, Next.js, React Native, Expo, Tailwind CSS, Supabase, and TypeScript you are architecting logic, optimising performance, designing resilient databases, and engineering seamless user experiences.
There is a distinct, irreplaceable joy in looking at a complex, fully functional application and knowing every single piece of logic was deliberately thought through, tested, and built to scale.
Don't get me wrong I still use AI, daily actually. AI is an incredible co-pilot, but there is a massive gulf between a quick AI-generated proof-of-concept and production software built to run a real business.
Prompt-generated apps often rely on black-box wrappers, fragile generated scripts, and bloated abstractions. When something breaks and in production, things always break, untangling a codebase you didn't author and don't fully understand can become a nightmare. Security holes, scaling bottlenecks, unpredictable state management are common hidden costs. You end up spending more time debugging AI output than it would have taken to build it right.
When software is engineered by hand using a solid React ecosystem, you retain total code control and complete asset ownership. Every component is purposeful, every database relation is secure, and the architecture is optimised for performance from day one. More importantly, it gives you a stable, extensible foundation that can grow, pivot, and integrate seamlessly with third-party APIs without hitting artificial platform walls.
In all honesty, businesses need resilient, high-performance web platforms and mobile apps that actually solve real-world problems.
That’s why I build.
AI can write functions, but it takes human vision, architectural discipline, and a genuine love for the craft to build software that lasts.
What’s your take? Are you leaning into AI generation for your projects, or do you still prefer the deep control of a hand-crafted codebase?
Let’s discuss in the comments.
