Your "inactive" subscribers aren't dead. Most brands just never gave them a reason to come back.
How to actually set up a re-engagement segment:
1. Define "inactive" with real data. 60-90 days without an open or click. For pet consumables, tie it to purchase cycle too.
2. Split the segment. Lapsed buyers need a "how's [pet's name] doing" check-in. Never-bought subscribers need a reason to finally buy. Different message, different offer.
3. Lead with a question, not a discount. "Still feeding Max the same food?" beats "Come back, 15% off." Discounts train people to wait for one.
4. Put the discount second. After the check-in email, not as the opener. Reads as a gesture, not a bribe.
5. Set a clean exit. No engagement after 2-3 emails, move them to suppressed. Mailing dead weight hurts deliverability for your whole list.
Why it matters: → Protects sender reputation for every other flow → Recovers revenue you already paid to acquire → Cleans your list so your real open rates reflect reality
Most Klaviyo accounts don't have this segment built - or have one sitting untouched since setup.
